Flu season is approaching fast, time to get your flu shots and find a flu shot locations. The season is upon us, and it’s time to dig out the old locators if you don’t get a flu shot at your doctors office. This season there are plenty of vaccines available and the 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against 2009 H1N1, and two other influenza viruses (an H3N2 virus and an influenza B virus). These viruses in each years vaccine change annually, based upon international observances and scientists’ estimations about which types and strains of viruses will circulate in that specific year. After 2 weeks from the original date of the vaccination, antibodies which provide the protection against the influenza virus infection develop in your body.

Who should get vaccinated has been determined by a vote taken on February 24th, 2010 by vaccine experts. They voted that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccination each year starting with this, the 2010-2011 flu season. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted for a “universal flue vaccination to expand the protection against the flu to more people. While the proclamation that everyone should get the vaccination hold’s true, there are others that are at high risk of having serious flu-related complications or because of the fact that they either live with of care for people who are at high risk for developing flu related complications.

List of People at High Risk for Developing These Complications:

1. Pregnant Women
2. Children Younger than 5, Especially Children Under the age of 2
3. People age 50 and older
4. People with and certain chronic medical conditions of any age
6. People whom care for or live with those at high risk including health care workers, household contacts of those at risk and household contacts and out of home caregivers for children under 6 months old.

Who Should Not Be Vaccinated

There are some people who should not get the vaccine without first consulting a physician. These include:

1. People who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs.
2. People who have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination in the past.
3. People who developed Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) within 6 weeks of getting an influenza vaccine.
4. Children less than 6 months of age (influenza vaccine is not approved for this age group).
5. People who have a moderate-to-severe illness with a fever and they should wait until they recuperate to get vaccinated.
